Small Town Celebrations

One of the great things about small town living in Illinois is the Celebrations that happen in the summertime.  Last week was one such event.  Spring Valley celebrated 125 years as a city.

There were many wonderful concerts, cookouts, a carnival, petting zoo and lots of things to bring the townspeople together.  One of my favorite events was the Water Fight that took place between the firefighters from the area.

Spring Valley was settled because of the rich coal deposits that are in the region. The first mine shaft was bored in 1884 and the town of Spring Valley was officially incorporated in 1886. One mine grew into three, drawing workers and their families from near and far.

Spring Valley has started projects to revitalize its parks.  City Square Park has a tank memorial, flags and is just a few blocks from the downtown shopping district.

In a few weeks Granville, IL will celebrate it's 175th on August 4th-6th.  Events include Free Movies in the Park, a Town wide Garage Sale, a Car Cruise, Music and a Street Dance, a parade, a tug of war tournament, craft show and lots of activities for families.
